a friend's mom was in a serious car accident wednesday, of the "you're lucky to be alive" caliber. yuck! hearing about it, though, and the seriousness of her injuries, has thrown me into care-giver mode with a vengance. i've spent a big chunk of today furiously email various friends, trying to arrange a visit and cheer-up gifts for tomorrow, plus the beginnings of more long-range stuff for when she gets home.

i'm a woman on a mission, and i won't rest until i avenge what was done (or rather, NOT done) to/for my mother during her 18 months of hell. i will NOT let another person be the victim of empty promises of a hot meal, company, housecleaning, errand-running, or even a cheerful note. and knowing that family can sometimes be the worst offenders (at least in mom's case; her younger sister all but vanished from the face of the earth), i suppose i'm doubly determined, although i can't say i know ANYTHING about her family!

here's hoping i can turn this off long enough to ENJOY the opera tonight, and maybe get a few hours of sleep.

You're so right about the fact that people often have the best of intentions for the first week or so, but after that, they disappear. The people that really struck me in our case were the neighbors who had never really been close to us. We didn't know them well, but starting a few weeks after Mom was gone, they started dropping by to see my dad regularly and sharing food with him. I thought it was so smart how they stepped in when other people had gone back to their routines.

Enjoy the opera tonight - I'm craving the moment I can walk out of here! I need a weekend badly after all the craziness at work this week!

Cyd, I think you are an absolute Goddess. What you're doing for Robyn and her Mom is amazing. What a great friend you are! I'm honored to say that I know you, and even more so to say that you are my friend. :-) {{hugs}}

No kidding. That's part of what I love about being a woman (not that this is inherent only to women, but...) - women just seem to have such a good innate network of caring for each other and knowing what to do. If you have good female friends, you know that whatever happens, you will be okay. It is amazing to watch a woman work to solve a problem or deal with a crisis - it's just incredible what we can do - especially Cyd!

aw, thank you, dear!! it isn't often that i get this single-minded focus and determination, but when i do, there's usually a reason, and i run with it. (last time was my parents' surprise 30th anniversary party, which turned out to be mom's last public outint pre-cancer, and for many, the last time they saw her looking "healthy")

i can get to be a bit, um, much, when i get this driven. promise to let me know when i'm headed towards "overbearing" or whatever.
